The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 10 to 1 on Monday night at Tropicana Field to take a three games to one lead in the World Series.
Jackson Chourio recorded four hits and a stolen base, while rookie pitcher Robert Gasser allowed only one hit over six scoreless innings. The victory marks the Brewers' eighth straight win in the postseason, tying the record for a single postseason run.
Chourio, who has eight hits in three Series games, opened the decisive fifth inning with a single and stole second base. He finished the game 4 for 5, including a double. Manager Pat Murphy called Chourio tremendous and noted that his performance gave the team a significant lift.
Gasser faced the minimum 18 batters, becoming the first starter to do so in a World Series game since Curt Schilling in 2001. He is also the first left-handed pitcher to achieve that feat since Sandy Koufax in 1965. Gasser allowed a leadoff single to Yandy Diaz in the first inning before retiring 14 consecutive batters.
The Brewers scored eight runs in the fifth inning, all with two outs. This sequence included seven consecutive hits, a postseason record. The rally began after a replay review overturned a forceout at second base, allowing the lineup to continue. Brice Turang drove in two runs with a single that bounced off shortstop Taylor Walls. Cooper Pratt added a two-run double and Sal Frelick scored on a double, extending the lead to 8-0.
Tampa Bay starter Freddy Peralta, the ALCS MVP, gave up five runs and seven hits in four and two-thirds innings. Rays manager Kevin Cash said Peralta tried to power through inconsistencies in the strike zone. The Rays, who led the American League with 98 regular season wins, now face elimination after dropping the third straight game of the series.
Brandon Woodruff pitched the ninth inning for Milwaukee, allowing one run and two hits in his first appearance in three and a half months. He had been sidelined by a shoulder injury. The Brewers, who lead the majors with 103 wins, have won four straight games after being down 3-0 in the series.
Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. Griffin Jax is set to start for Tampa Bay, while the Brewers have not yet announced their starter. Milwaukee has won the last four games, and a victory on Tuesday would secure their first World Series title.
