Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 14. The announcement came Monday night from the NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation. The performance is scheduled for SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The decision marks a shift from his previous role. Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, has advised the league on entertainment since 2019. At that time, the rapper told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that he did not want to perform himself. Goodell later said he asked Jay-Z to take the stage when the moment felt right.

Jay-Z confirmed his participation in a statement. He described the move as the culmination of a thirty-year journey. "From 'Reasonable Doubt' to standing on the Super Bowl halftime stage, this has been a journey," he said. "This run continues to be a dream come true."

The stadium holds recent history for the artist. Jay-Z played a sold-out concert at SoFi Stadium over the weekend. That show closed a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut album, "Reasonable Doubt." The tour included sold-out shows in New York, London, and Paris.

Roc Nation will executive produce the halftime show. Hamish Hamilton will serve as the director. The league has sought to elevate the production quality in recent years. Bad Bunny’s performance in February won a record seven Emmy Awards, including for best variety special. Kendrick Lamar’s show from last year won for music direction.

Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, is a four-time Emmy winner. He has received 25 Grammy Awards from 89 nominations. He is the second-most nominated artist in history, behind his wife, Beyoncé. He became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 and joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.

His recent concerts featured a rotating cast of guests. At the SoFi Stadium finale, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Too $hort joined him. His daughter Blue Ivy played piano on two tracks. Earlier in the tour, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Eminem, and Nas appeared with him in New York.
