Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., posted a video of herself walking on a lake dock Friday while a Somali hip-hop track played in the background. The song lyrics boast that enemies scatter and are crushed. The post appeared days after federal agents searched her Washington home.
Omar wrote on the social media platform X, "Less scrolling, more strolling. Enjoying our beautiful Minnesota lakes." The video shows her and her husband, Tim Mynett, walking on a dock with fall foliage in the background. They pose, smile, and chat as they stroll. Omar holds a coffee cup. The clip ends with a montage of photos from the walk.
The accompanying song, titled "Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya," was performed by Ilkacase Qays, also known as Muse Abdikadir. He is a U.S.-based Somali singer and rapper. The track features Somali singer Hodan Abdirahman. A translation of the lyrics says, "No enemy dares threaten me, wherever I step, they scatter." It continues, "I have always been the source of their distress."
Other lines in the song state, "If the just one had felt anger on my behalf, would he not have crushed the enemy underfoot?" The cultural analysis of the track describes it as using exaggerated imagery to ridicule opponents. It portrays them as people who would lose sleep and suffer humiliation.
Omar returned to public view in Minnesota on Friday. She had been out of the public eye for nearly two weeks since an October 12 raid on her Washington, D.C., home. Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations conducted the search as part of a criminal investigation. During the raid, agents confiscated her passport and cellphone.
On Friday, Omar cast an early ballot in Minneapolis alongside state Attorney General Keith Ellison. Media members followed the pair as they voted. They later appeared at the Karmel Mall of Somalia in Minneapolis, where they ate lunch and posed for photographs with members of the Somali community.
The investigation focuses on potential fraud related to immigration paperwork filled out by Omar or her father during the citizenship process. HSI is the main investigatory agency for the Department of Homeland Security. Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, was interviewed by federal investigators after the raid. Agents also obtained Omar’s DNA.
Omar restricted who could reply directly to her social media post. The only public comment came from former U.S. House member Cori Bush, who wrote, "We love this." Border czar Tom Homan said last week that if fraud is proven, Omar could be denaturalized. It is unclear when the lake video was filmed.
