The 2026 Ballon d'Or winner will be announced at a ceremony held at the London Palladium. The prize, football's most prestigious individual honor, is expected to go to one of three players: Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, or Harry Kane.

The debate has narrowed to these three names as the ceremony approaches. Yamal, a 19-year-old Spanish winger, and Mbappe, a French forward, have both publicly campaigned for the award. Kane, the England striker, has remained quieter about his own chances despite a prolific scoring record.

Predictions vary by source. Avisia, a French data firm, lists Yamal as the favorite with a 23 percent probability for the 2025-26 season. Kane follows at 21 percent, while Mbappe and 2024 winner Rodri are tied at 19 percent. Lionel Messi holds the fifth spot with 18 percent, a potential ninth title. Bookmakers place Kane as the clear favorite, estimating his odds at roughly 70 percent.

Figures in the sport have weighed in on the candidates. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports Messi, citing the Argentine's performance at age 38. Former Italy defender Marco Materazzi agreed, calling Messi's form exceptional. Jude Bellingham, who is also shortlisted, backed Kane, praising his work ethic. Anthony Gordon, an England teammate of Yamal, favored the Barcelona player. Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Tchouameni supported Mbappe.

Statistical records show strong cases for the top contenders. Mbappe led La Liga in goals with 25 and topped the Champions League with 15. He also recorded 12 goals at the World Cup, a tournament record. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by a player since Messi's 82 in 2011-12. However, trophy counts complicate the picture. Mbappe won no major titles with his club or country. Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third at the World Cup with England.

Yamal's case rests on silverware. He won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona, despite an injury-shortened season with fewer personal goals. Historical trends favor major team victories, as only four of the last 19 winners did not secure a Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America title in the award year.

If Yamal wins, he will become the youngest recipient in the award's history. The current record is held by Brazilian legend Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.
