Boston University men’s hockey defeated the University of Maine 3-2 in overtime at Agganis Arena on Saturday. The result extended the Terriers’ winning streak over the Black Bears to 10 games at the home ice.
UMaine had controlled the opening period, outshooting Boston University 21-8. Rowan Calvert scored the first career goal of his career from the low slot to put UMaine ahead 1-0. Max Scott added a second goal at the 14:45 mark of the first period, extending the lead to 2-0 after an assist from Lee Parks.
The second period remained scoreless, with UMaine maintaining a slight edge in shot attempts, 8-6. However, the dynamic shifted in the third period. Tynan Lawrence scored a power play goal at 6:56, assisted by Conrad Fondrk, to narrow the gap to one. That was his sixth goal of the season.
Lawrence tied the game at 2-2 with just 2:12 remaining in regulation. Jack Harvey skated down the center ice and passed to Lawrence, who beat goaltender Albin Boija with a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle. The sequence followed a chaotic stretch of penalties where UMaine incurred an unsportsmanlike conduct call on Lukas Peterson after a boarding call against Jax Wismer. Scott was whistled for slashing 16 seconds later, setting up the four-on-three chance that Lawrence capitalized on.
Caleb Malhotra won the game in overtime at 1:35. Harvey provided the assist, passing to Malhotra on the right side of the Maine zone. Malhotra maneuvered around a stick check and another defender before snapping a wrist shot into the short-side corner for his second goal of the season.
Mikhail Yegorov made 34 saves for Boston University, while Albin Boija stopped 24 shots for UMaine. The Terriers improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in Hockey East play. The Black Bears fell to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. UMaine has not won at Agganis Arena since 2018.
Head coach Ben Barr cited discipline issues as a factor in the loss. He noted that the team had too many players on the bench late in the game due to penalties. UMaine will play UMass at home on Friday and Saturday. Boston University travels to Michigan State for its next two games.
