Boston Public Schools will vote on a plan to close two high schools and alter operations at two others on Dec. 2. The proposal includes shutting down Charlestown High School, a decision that has drawn immediate pushback from students and parents in the neighborhood.

District officials cite a 32 percent decline in enrollment over the past three years as the primary reason for the closure. Currently, the Charlestown High School building operates at 53 percent capacity. The district has stated that another secondary school may eventually move into the facility, though administrators have not yet identified which institution would relocate there.

Residents gathered in large numbers at a Wednesday night school committee meeting to argue against the plan. Teachers and families contended that the school serves as a vital community hub rather than just a collection of enrollment figures. Students expressed their opposition through cheers and direct address, emphasizing the personal value of their institution.

One student told the committee, "This school has given me opportunities, friendships, and a place where I feel at home." The sentiment reflected a broader effort by the student body to humanize the data behind the budgetary decision.

Tensions rose earlier in the week when students confronted Superintendent Mary Skipper at the high school regarding the proposed shutdown. The district has scheduled two follow-up events for Thursday night to address community concerns: a virtual meeting for the board and an in-person session with the neighborhood council.

If the committee approves the proposal on Dec. 2, the changes will take effect in June 2028. The district has specified that current students at Charlestown High will receive priority status for assignments to their new schools.
