Clocks Fall Back in Florida, Shifting Sunrise Times Earlier
The shift to standard time moves dawn to 6:40 a.m. in much of the state, while the debate over permanent time zones continues in Washington.

Florida and most of the United States will switch to standard time on Sunday, Oct. 31, as clocks move back one hour at 2 a.m. This change, mandated by the Uniform Time Act of 1966, results in earlier sunrises and sunsets for residents across the country.
In much of Florida, the sun will rise approximately 6:40 a.m. instead of 7:40 a.m. Sunset will also arrive an hour earlier, moving from roughly 6:40 p.m. to 5:40 p.m. Although the clock change does not alter actual weather patterns or the planet's tilt, it provides a tangible marker for the changing length of daylight.
Days will continue to lose more than one minute of daylight each day until the winter solstice on Monday, Dec. 21. That date marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, signaling the official start of astronomical winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
The annual time switch has reignited discussion about the utility of changing clocks twice a year. Florida lawmakers passed the Sunshine Protection Act in 2018, stating the state's desire to maintain daylight saving time year-round once federal law permits. Nearly two dozen states have adopted similar measures, but Congress has yet to approve the change, leaving the current system in effect.
Public opinion remains divided on the best alternative. A Gallup poll indicates that 72% of Americans dislike the biannual time change. Respondents are split on the solution, with about half supporting year-round standard time and roughly a quarter favoring permanent daylight saving time. The core issue involves whether citizens prefer more morning light or extended evening daylight.
If the country were to adopt year-round daylight saving time, the latest sunrise of the year would occur between 8:30 and 9 a.m. in late January. Under the current schedule, daylight saving time will resume on March 14, 2027, when clocks will move forward one hour.
