Dunwoody football coach Matt Schmitz will lead his team against undefeated Heritage of Conyers on Friday at North DeKalb Stadium for the Region 4-6A championship. The Wildcats, currently 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the region, have won seven consecutive games since a 23-21 loss to Centennial in their season opener. This contest marks their first opportunity to claim a regional title since 2008, a drought that ends the program's wait for that specific honor after a state championship in 1993.

Schmitz, who served as the offensive coordinator for three seasons before taking the head coaching job in 2025, attributed the team's recent surge to third-quarter execution. He noted that the squad had previously struggled to maintain focus in the final frame, often leading to losses. By improving their late-game discipline, Dunwoody has climbed from a playoff appearance last year to a championship game this season.

The Wildcats will be led by running back Bradley Stephens, who has accumulated 1,785 rushing yards this season. Schmitz praised Stephens' ability to move the chains and his physical play. The junior has played every game, including two playoff contests and three others, demonstrating consistent performance throughout the schedule. His production has anchored the offense as the team prepares for the high-stakes matchup.

Schmitz observed that the defense has become a fundamental reason for the team's success, noting that the group has grown more confident in their coverage. He mentioned that the team has not been perfect but has shown resilience when facing adversity. The coaching staff, including assistant coach Dale Doyon, who serves as the defensive coordinator and co-defensive coordinator, has emphasized the importance of staying composed under pressure.

The game is scheduled to take place on Friday at North DeKalb Stadium. The Wildcats will play in front of a crowd that anticipates the team's next step toward a new on-campus facility. That venue, Ryan Seacrest Stadium, will seat 3,000 fans and is set to open next fall as DeKalb County's first on-campus stadium.

The result of this Friday matchup will determine the region's representative for the playoffs. Dunwoody enters the game with a strong record and a clear focus on closing out the season with a title.
