Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux announced that four people died and approximately 15 others were injured during three distinct shootings in the Deep Ellum entertainment district early Sunday morning. The violence occurred in the aftermath of Halloween festivities, creating a chaotic scene for first responders and witnesses alike. Comeaux described the situation as a complex and evolving investigation during a Sunday morning news briefing.
The incidents took place over a span of roughly an hour. Preliminary data places the first shooting at approximately 12:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elm Street. A second incident occurred at 1:05 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street. The third shooting happened at 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street. Detectives currently have no evidence linking the three scenes, and the injury count remains fluid as some victims transported themselves to local hospitals.
Chief Comeaux stated that the department was fully staffed for the expected Halloween crowds. "We looked at the plan. We knew it was Saturday night. We knew it was Halloween, so we were staffed properly," he said. He noted that extra patrols had been deployed in anticipation of large numbers of people in the area. In one instance, officers located less than two blocks from a scene ran directly toward the gunfire and arrived almost immediately.
Police reported that officers performed life-saving measures on the scene, successfully reviving at least one injured victim. The department has made arrests and is interviewing several individuals to determine their connections to the shootings. Detectives are also questioning witnesses and actively searching for additional suspects responsible for the violence.
Investigators plan to conduct door-to-door canvasses of local businesses to collect surveillance video and review footage from area cameras. Police appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with photos, videos, or social media clips from the area to come forward. Crime scenes are expected to remain active throughout Sunday as evidence technicians gather shell casings and process the areas.
"This is completely unacceptable for it to take place in Dallas, and we're going to do everything that we need to do to get everyone in custody that's responsible for this," Comeaux said.
