Jordanian security forces detained three armed men on Monday following a shootout in Karak, bringing the investigation into a church attack that killed nine people to a critical stage. The suspects were located hiding in an abandoned house and were taken into custody after refusing to surrender.

The initial violence erupted on Friday during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud, situated roughly 120 kilometres southwest of Amman. Witnesses reported that gunfire continued for several minutes, resulting in nine deaths and 40 additional injuries. The Public Security Directorate identified the attackers as "extremist terrorists" in a statement released to state media.

During the Monday operation, officers engaged the three men who opened fire on the security team. All three suspects were wounded in the exchange, though no security personnel sustained injuries. Authorities recovered multiple firearms and ammunition from the scene but have not yet released the names of the detainees or confirmed specific ties to Islamist militant organizations.

King Abdullah, a close partner to the United States in regional counter-terrorism efforts, ordered security forces to respond with an "iron fist" to the assault on the country's Christian minority. The attack marks a rare instance of mass violence in Jordan, a nation generally viewed as stable in the Middle East despite previous disruptions of militant plots.

Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya stated that officials are examining the factors driving young people toward extremism. He emphasized that anyone found to have participated in the attack would be held accountable, while the directorate noted in its statement that the suspects had met their "just fate."
