Airlines face mounting pressure to cover rising fuel costs, a burden that often lands on travelers' wallets. JetBlue announced on Tuesday that it is increasing its checked baggage fees for the second time in less than a year.

The new rates take effect immediately for domestic, Caribbean, and Latin American flights. During off-peak travel periods, the cost to check a single bag for most economy passengers rises from $39 to $50. During peak periods, the fee increases from $49 to $55.

This follows a similar adjustment in March, when the airline raised fees by as much as $9 due to rising operating costs. JetBlue stated that the higher baggage charges are intended to support competitive base fares. The carrier explained that this model allows customers to pay for checked bags only when needed, rather than having those costs built into every ticket price.

The airline is also encouraging travelers to plan ahead. Passengers who add checked bags to their itineraries at least 24 hours before departure can save up to $15 on the first bag. This incentive is designed to streamline airport operations and reward early preparation.

Loyalty program members will see varying benefits under the new structure. Holders of JetBlue Plus, JetBlue Business, and JetBlue Premier cards can check one bag free of charge for themselves and up to three travel companions. TrueBlue Mosaic members receive at least one free checked bag, while Mosaic 2, 3, and 4 members receive two free checked bags each.

The financial strain on carriers stems largely from the global oil market. According to the jet fuel price tracker maintained by Airlines for America, the price of jet fuel reached $4.41 per gallon on Monday. This represents a sharp rise from just over $2 per gallon in January. Jet fuel remains the second-largest operational cost for airlines after labor.

JetBlue is not the only carrier adjusting its pricing. Southwest and other major airlines have also raised their baggage fees this year. The sector is increasingly relying on ancillary revenue streams to maintain financial stability while navigating volatile energy markets.
