Residents in Oakland and Scarborough will host the regional field hockey championships on Wednesday. The Class A, B, and C North title games will be played at Messalonskee High School. The South championship matches will take place at Scarborough High School. These contests determine which teams advance to the state tournament scheduled for Saturday.
The North slate begins at 3:30 p.m. with the Class B final. Top seed Nokomis High of Newport, holding a 15-1 record, faces second seed Leavitt of Turner, which is also 15-1. Nokomis seeks to avenge its only regular season loss, a 2-0 defeat to Leavitt on Sept. 17. Leavitt’s sole loss came against Class A Skowhegan on Sept. 26.
At 5:30 p.m., the Class C North game pits Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft against Dexter. Foxcroft is undefeated with a 16-0 record. Dexter, a 13-3 team located just 13 miles away, aims for its first win over Foxcroft after losing both regular season matchups. The Class A North final follows at 7:30 p.m. between undefeated Mt. Ararat of Topsham and Skowhegan, who is 15-1.
In the South region, the Class B final starts at 3 p.m. Yarmouth, ranked first with a 15-1 record, plays Freeport, which is 13-3. The Class C South match is set for 5 p.m. between top seed Winthrop, 15-1, and Spruce Mountain of Livermore Falls, 14-2. The South Class A game concludes the day at 7 p.m., featuring Cheverus of Portland against Thornton Academy of Saco.
Cheverus holds the top seed in the South with a 16-0 record. The team is the three-time defending state champion. Thornton Academy enters the match as the third seed with a 13-3 record. Foxcroft Academy won the Class C state title last year, breaking a four-year streak held by Winthrop.
Mt. Ararat earned its spot in the North final with an 8-0 win over Brewer in the quarterfinals and a 2-0 victory over Messalonskee in the semifinals. Skowhegan, coached by first-year head coach Gina Davis, advanced with 2-1 wins against Lewiston and Camden Hills of Rockport. Mt. Ararat previously defeated Skowhegan 4-1 on Oct. 12.
Nokomis reached the final after beating Erskine Academy of South China 6-0 and Old Town 5-1. Leavitt advanced by defeating Hermon 5-0 and Gardiner 3-1. Foxcroft won its semifinal matches against Orono 9-0 and Stearns/Schenck 6-0. Dexter defeated Piscataquis Community High of Guilford 4-0 and Mountain Valley of Rumford 2-0 to secure its berth.
