Neve Campbell has confirmed her return to the Scream franchise, stating that she will appear in the eighth film. The actress said that the upcoming sequel is part of her current slate of projects. She specifically noted, "Scream 8. That’s in the pipeline as well. I’ll be in it." Campbell did not provide details regarding the plot or specific production timelines for the new movie.
The news follows the release of Scream 7, which marked Campbell’s return to the role of Sidney Prescott after a hiatus. She originally sat out the 2023 release, Scream VI, due to a contract dispute. At the time, Campbell issued a statement explaining her decision to leave that particular film. She said, "As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream.I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."
Scream VI featured Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, who has remained a consistent presence in the series. That installment also included members of the younger cast introduced in the 2022 entry. However, several of those younger actors were either fired or chose not to return for the seventh film. Following these changes, Campbell agreed to reprise her role as Sidney for Scream 7.
The seventh film was written and directed by series creator Kevin Williamson. The story focused on Sidney and her teenage daughter, portrayed by Isabel May, as they defended themselves against a new Ghost Face killer. The film received mixed reviews from critics but performed strongly at the box office. It became the highest-grossing entry in the series to date.
Scream 7 earned a total of $213 million worldwide. This figure surpassed the previous franchise record held by the original Scream, which made $173 million in total box office receipts. Campbell has appeared in all but one of the movies in the series to date. With the departure of many younger cast members, Campbell and Cox remain the most prominent stars associated with the franchise, alongside the character of Ghost Face.
The confirmation of Scream 8 continues the long-running story of Sidney Prescott facing the killer. The franchise has maintained its production cycle despite various casting changes and contractual negotiations over the past few years. The new entry will add to the series of sequels that have kept the slasher genre active in recent years.
