Fans of the 1986 music film Crossroads can expect a new installment in the series. Screenwriter John Fusco confirmed that he and actor Ralph Macchio are actively working on a sequel. The project marks a return to the story nearly four decades after the original movie’s release.
Fusco and Macchio have maintained contact over the years. Fusco told Guitar World that they frequently discussed the possibility of a follow-up. The idea gained momentum recently, leading to a concrete plan for production. Fusco stated that he and Macchio have a specific vision for the new film.
The original movie followed Eugene “Lightning Boy” Martone, a character based on blues musician Robert Johnson. Johnson is often cited as a member of the “27 Club” and is said to have sold his soul to the Devil for musical talent. In the 1986 film, Macchio portrayed Martone. He was mentored by Willie Brown, who sold his soul in his youth.
Guitarist Steve Vai is set to return to the cast. He played Jack Butler in the first film. In that storyline, Butler fought Martone over the ownership of Brown’s soul. Butler aligned with the Satanic side. If Martone lost the fight, his soul would go to Hell alongside Brown’s. In the original ending, Vai’s character lost the battle.
Macchio described the new film as focusing on a different character. He said the story would take place years later and would be less about Martone. Instead, it would center on someone relevant to today’s music scene. Macchio noted that he has not given up on the project, though he could not provide deep details yet.
Fusco said the new movie will be exciting for music fans and blues purists. He kept specific plot points under wraps. However, the involvement of two key figures from the original cast suggests a continuation of the rivalry. Macchio confirmed that Vai is on board for the return.
Vai expressed enthusiasm for the role. He said he knows Macchio wants to defeat his character again. The guitarist stated that Jack Butler needs his revenge. This comment indicates that the conflict between the two guitarists will likely drive the new narrative.
