Residents of Oleshky will receive food and medicine later Friday. A humanitarian convoy has been staged in the nearby town of Armyansk to transport supplies into the city. The mission includes 25 buses, ambulances, and other vehicles.
Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s ombudsman and chief negotiator, said the team aims to reach every person in need. He stated that the group is bringing aid to local residents. Lubinets noted that the convoy pays special attention to the elderly and people with disabilities.
Armyansk is located in Russian-occupied southern Ukraine. It sits about 85 kilometers, or 53 miles, south of Oleshky. U.S. First Lady Melania Trump brokered the localized ceasefire and the aid mission. She led talks with Lubinets and his Russian counterpart, Yana Lantratova.
Oleshky gained global attention as residents became stranded by heavy fighting and mined roads. The population ran out of food and medicine. The city is just inside Russian-occupied territory in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region.
Moscow and Kyiv have observed the truce in and around the city since Tuesday. The two sides remain fully engaged in the war elsewhere. Russia’s full-scale invasion began more than 4.5 years ago. Previous ceasefire talks failed or the resulting truces quickly fell apart.
