A two-year-old girl died after falling from a fifth-story window in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx on Tuesday, November 3. The incident occurred in the evening at an apartment building on East 138th Street. New York City police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fall.
The child, identified as Julia, managed to remove plastic accordion-style side panels that covered the space next to a window-mounted air conditioning unit. She then passed through the opening and dropped into an alleyway behind the building. Emergency responders transported the toddler to Harlem Hospital, where medical staff pronounced her dead.
Thessa Wilcox, the child's mother, described the moment she found Julia outside the apartment. "She was no longer there. She was outside the window. I couldn't believe it," Wilcox told CBS News New York. She added, "Now, my baby is no longer here and I cannot bring her back."
Chayanne Polanco, Julia's father, urged other parents to cherish their time with their children. "Make sure you tell them you love them every night. Hug them," Polanco said. José Sosa, the building superintendent, stated that he was the first person to reach the child. He found her lying face down and observed no signs of life.
The investigation focuses on the installation of the air conditioning unit. The family said they installed the equipment themselves. Sosa noted that the plastic side panels between the unit and the window frame were held only by adhesive tape. He said Julia was able to remove the panels and slip through the gap. Police have not yet released a full technical reconstruction of the setup.
The accident illustrates the risk posed by open windows or those partially blocked by climate control units. While accordion panels cover side gaps, they are not always designed to prevent falls for small children. Experts recommend ensuring units are installed according to manufacturer instructions and that side elements remain securely fastened. Furniture should be kept away from windows to prevent children from reaching openings.
New York City Police have kept the case open to determine exactly how the accident happened. Officials do not suspect a crime at this time. Neighbors and family members have built a small memorial between the buildings at the location where Julia fell. The site now features flowers, candles, and balloons. No arrests or charges have been reported in connection with the incident.
