Bodum USA has initiated a recall of 5.9 million French press coffee makers due to a risk of glass carafes breaking and causing burn injuries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission posted a notice detailing the defect, which affects models sold between 1974 and October 2026.
The company, an American subsidiary of a Danish-Swiss coffee hardware manufacturer, has logged 70 reports of broken glass carafes. Of those incidents, 48 resulted in burns. The recall covers various models, including 8-cup presses and 12-cup Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya units.
These appliances were distributed through major retailers such as Target and Walmart, as well as Amazon.com and other stores. Safety regulators identified metal spoons as a primary factor in the failures. Stirring coffee with metal utensils can damage or crack the glass, leading to unexpected shattering.
Bodum USA advises customers to stop using metal utensils to stir their coffee. Users should also avoid operating the carafes if they show signs of cracks or damage. The company is sending plastic stirring spoons to customers who contact them.
A customer service representative for Bodum USA told CBS News that the company is not offering refunds for the recalled items. The recall number is 27-055.
