Land-Grant Brewing Company announced on Thursday that it has acquired the Nocterra Brewing Company brand and its taproom in Powell. The new owners plan to reopen the location in late November, aiming to return Nocterra beers to shelves and taps across Central Ohio.

The reopened taproom will serve as an immersive Christmas pop-up for the holiday season. The space will feature extensive decorations, specialty holiday cocktails served in themed take-home glassware, and a Christmas Ale. Rentable heated igloos will be available in the beer garden. The location is situated less than 10 minutes from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, making it a potential stop before or after the annual Wildlights event.

Adam Benner, president and co-founder of Land-Grant, stated that Nocterra created a community and a destination with a unique identity. He noted that the brand built more than just a lineup of beers. Land-Grant plans to brew Nocterra beers at its Franklinton production facility, distributing the familiar favorites to retailers, bars, and restaurants in Columbus and surrounding areas.

The holiday pop-up is intended as a precursor to larger changes. Land-Grant anticipates closing the Powell taproom temporarily in January 2027 for a comprehensive renovation. The project will focus on expanding the usable taproom space, optimizing the existing footprint, and improving the guest experience. The company also plans to bring elements of its Wintergarden experience to Powell, which may include new seasonal activities and year-round gathering opportunities.

Benner cited Land-Grant's twelve years in Franklinton as a learning period for how thoughtful spaces and creative programming bring people together. He said the company is excited to apply those lessons in Powell. Walt Keys, creative director and co-founder of Land-Grant, emphasized that the acquisition is about continuing the work Nocterra started rather than replacing it. Keys expressed gratitude to Nocterra founders Bryan Duncan, Lori Duncan, and Bruce Vivian for building a brand with a strong identity and a loyal community.

The acquisition occurs during a period of rising operating costs and changing consumer habits for the craft beer industry. Land-Grant has had a successful year, earning a bronze medal at the 2026 World Beer Cup for its Great Falls Scotch Ale and appearing on USA TODAY's 2026 list of the Best Bars in America. The company views the Nocterra acquisition as an addition to its hospitality portfolio.

Specific reopening dates, beer availability details, and renovation schedules are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The immediate priority for the new management is getting Nocterra's beer back into the market and welcoming guests to the Powell location.
