Elon Musk announced on X this week that Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck by mid-2027. The move clears the production line at the company’s Texas factory to accommodate increased output of the Cybercab, a two-seat electric taxi designed for autonomous driving.

The Cybercab operates without a steering wheel or pedals. It is built specifically for Tesla’s Robotaxi service, marking a distinct shift away from traditional vehicle controls.

The pickup truck has specific ties to Southern California, where Musk first revealed the stainless-steel design at Tesla’s Hawthorne Design Center in 2019. Production began in 2023, and the vehicle quickly became known for its angular shape and claims of high towing capacity.

Sales figures tell a different story than the initial hype. According to Kelley Blue Book data, Tesla delivered 20,237 Cybertrucks in 2025. That number represents a sharp decline from the 38,965 units sold the previous year.

Musk had projected annual sales of 250,000 units once the truck hit the market. The actual numbers fall far short of that target. The model has also faced multiple recalls in recent months, covering issues with the rearview camera and pedals.

With the Cybertruck winding down, Tesla’s revenue will continue to rely heavily on the Model Y and Model 3. These two vehicles currently account for the majority of the company’s total sales volume.
