A Patriot air and missile defense system is moving from Texas to the Middle East. The unit includes radar equipment, an engagement control station, missile launchers, and interceptor missiles. The transfer aims to strengthen American defenses as Washington and Israel prepare for possible heavy combat operations against Iran.
The buildup follows a period of increased regional tension. On October 1, a US official confirmed that the USS Theodore Roosevelt and additional Marine personnel were being sent to the region. This decision expanded Washington's military options after an earlier commitment to deploy a third aircraft carrier and more Marines to the area.
US officials told The Wall Street Journal that Washington warned several Gulf Arab countries to prepare for a short, intense military campaign against Iran. The operation is expected to occur following the November 3 midterm elections. US forces are currently replenishing munitions stockpiles. Bomber aircraft and fighter jets are also being prepared for possible strikes.
Troops have been relocated from bases considered vulnerable to Iranian attacks. Approximately 20 US warships are currently operating in the Middle East. An additional aircraft carrier strike group and a Marine Expeditionary Unit are expected to join the region in November. Some vessels may rotate out of the area during that time.
President Donald Trump is weighing further military action but has not made a final decision. Reports indicate he is leaning toward strikes targeting Iranian infrastructure and nuclear facilities. A negotiated agreement remains a possibility. Iran has threatened to expand retaliation if attacks resume, citing targets such as energy infrastructure, airports, and civilian facilities across the Persian Gulf.
Security concerns have risen after US intelligence warned that Iranian efforts to target Americans had intensified. Secretary of State Marco Rubio received an intelligence memorandum on Friday confirming this shift. Separately, two diplomatic sources said on October 15 that Tehran instructed Hezbollah to increase its readiness for a possible renewed conflict.
