The Minnesota Vikings will visit Detroit on Sunday at 12 p.m. to face the NFL's only other team with a potent scoring attack. The unbeaten Vikings, who hold the league's lowest points allowed at 12.3 per game, will test the Lions, who average 30.7 points per game. Detroit ranks second in the league in scoring, behind only Buffalo.
Quarterback Kyler Murray described the upcoming game as a dogfight during a press conference on Thursday. He noted the hostile environment and the talent on the field. Murray said the team is prepared and excited for the opportunity to compete against a great team. He expressed confidence in the offense, stating that the group needs to end drives with touchdowns instead of field goals.
The Vikings' offense has struggled to convert drives into scores recently. Minnesota has scored just four touchdowns over the last five games. The team averages 1.5 offensive touchdowns per game, which is the second-lowest mark in the NFL. This statistical mismatch presents a key challenge for the NFC North leaders.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff acknowledged the difficulty of the matchup. He said the team wants to play the best and beat the best. Goff called the Vikings the best team in the league on paper. He added that it will be fun to try to solve the defensive challenges presented by Minnesota.
Historical context supports the offensive threat. In 2019, Baltimore’s high-scoring offense beat New England’s stout defense, handing the Patriots their first loss of that season. That was the last time the NFL saw a similar Week 8 or later matchup of a team giving up 13 or fewer points and a team scoring 30 or more.
Detroit coach Dan Campbell emphasized the importance of the divisional rivalry. He said the team is fired up for the competition. Campbell called this matchup as good as it gets for the Lions. The Lions are coming off a 20-17 win over Green Bay in their first division game of the season.
Jared Goff has been a central figure in Detroit's offense. He has thrown 223 passes without an interception this season. He has 14 touchdown passes without a pick, matching Russell Wilson’s 2019 record for the most touchdown passes without an interception through six games. Goff ranks first in the NFL with a 12.5 passer rating and 298 yards passing per game.
The Vikings have won four straight NFC North games and nine of their last 12 in the division. Minnesota is plus-7 in turnovers, an NFL-best mark. The Lions have won two straight games for the first time this season. Detroit’s defense allowed an average of 19 points during that winning streak.
