On this day in 2008, a major milestone in American political history was reached.
The path to the 2008 election involved several years of buildup. In 1979, the Iran hostage crisis began when students took the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, holding 52 people for 444 days. By 1980, Ronald Reagan won the presidency, defeating incumbent Jimmy Carter. In 1991, Reagan opened his presidential library in Simi Valley, California, in front of five past and present U.S. presidents. Yitzhak Rabin, the prime minister of Israel, was assassinated in 1995 after attending a peace rally. Then in 2007, the face of King Tutankhamen was shown to the public for the first time since his burial more than 3,000 years prior.
The 2008 race featured Barack Obama of Illinois against John McCain of Arizona. Obama won the election, becoming the first Black president of the United States. This victory occurred before the 2016 implementation of the Paris climate accord, a global pact to cut greenhouse gas pollution that carried no sanctions for non-compliance.
The most recent entry in this historical record dates to 2025. In that year, Zohran Mamdani, 34, was elected the youngest mayor of New York City in over a century. Mamdani, a Democrat, defeated former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani won a four-year term, marking a strong showing for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Today, November 4, marks the 308th day of 2025. There are 57 days remaining in the year. The day also marks the birthdays of several public figures. Delbert McClinton, a blues musician, turns 86. Former first lady Laura Bush turns 80. Author Charles Frazier is 76. Ralph Macchio, an actor, is 65, as is Jeff Probst, the host of the television show Survivor. Matthew McConaughey, an actor, is 57. Bethenny Frankel, a TV personality and entrepreneur, is 56. Gregory Porter, a jazz musician, is 55. Orlando Pace, a Football Hall of Famer, is 51, as is celebrity chef Curtis Stone. Devin Hester, also in the Football Hall of Fame, is 44. Kiana Madeira, an actor, is 34. Keshi, a singer, is 32. Tyrese Maxey, an NBA All-Star, is 26.
These events span nearly a century, linking the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922 to the recent election of Mamdani in New York.
