Voters across Maine are heading to the polls Tuesday with the state on track to set a new historical benchmark for midterm participation. Secretary of State Shenna Bellows told reporters in Augusta that the state is likely to see its highest number of eligible voters casting ballots in any midterm election in its history. She noted that the early absentee voting period already produced record levels of engagement, suggesting a strong day at the polls.

The path to this record began with a surge in early voting activity. Bellows reported that more than 300,000 Mainers had submitted their ballots before Election Day. That figure represents roughly one-third of the state’s registered voters. For context, the 2022 midterms set the previous state record with nearly 681,000 votes cast, a participation rate that exceeded 70% of registered voters. Bellows said officials believe the current numbers will eclipse that 2022 total.

Local election officials are seeing similar spikes in their respective towns. In Bowdoinham, Town Clerk Tina Magno reported that her office is processing over 900 absentee ballots for Tuesday. She had never previously issued more than 800 in a single election. Magno also noted a steady stream of voters arriving to cast ballots in person throughout the day. In Yarmouth, officials distributed 3,200 absentee ballots in the weeks leading up to the election, a number more than three times the usual volume. By 9 a.m. on Tuesday, only 158 of those ballots remained unreturned.

Deputy Clerk Ruth Bennett, who has managed Yarmouth elections for 20 years, described the past month as a period of intense activity. She told reporters that the volume of work had been exceptional. Bennett’s comments reflect a statewide pattern where early and absentee voting has driven participation well above typical midterm levels. The high turnout is occurring amid high-stakes federal races, including the U.S. Senate contest between incumbent Republican Susan Collins and Democrat Troy Jackson.

Because Maine uses ranked-choice voting for federal and local elections, the final results may not be known immediately. If no candidate secures a majority of the vote, automatic runoffs will be triggered. Bellows warned that this process could take more than a week to complete. She told reporters in Lewiston earlier in the day that it was possible results would be pending past midnight as tallies were finalized.

Polls closed at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Bellows said the state was watching the results closely to determine if any major races would proceed to the ranked-choice phase. The final vote counts will establish whether the 2026 midterms surpass the 2022 record, which made Maine a national leader in voter participation. Officials in municipalities across the state are currently tallying the in-person and returned absentee votes.

The election results will determine the balance of power in Congress for the latter half of President Donald Trump’s second term. While some races may remain uncertain for several days, the preliminary data indicates a historic level of civic engagement. Bellows characterized the turnout as extraordinary, citing the sheer volume of ballots processed in the weeks preceding the election. The state’s election infrastructure is now focused on counting the remaining ballots to confirm the final records.
