The Atlanta Falcons suffered a 16-0 defeat at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a rain-soaked contest on Sunday.

The result marked a historic anomaly for the visiting team. Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield completed zero passes during the entire game. No team has won a contest without a completed pass since 1974. Furthermore, no team has secured a double-digit victory without a completed pass since 1945, according to ESPN and NFL research. Mayfield’s final passing attempt of the day occurred roughly 90 seconds into the second half.

The Falcons' own aerial attack was equally ineffective. Quarterback Michael Penix threw four interceptions on just 24 attempts. He had thrown only one interception in his previous appearances this season, occurring in his debut against Green Bay more than a month prior. The offense also failed to convert on any of its 12 third-down opportunities.

Penix acknowledged the difficulty of the performance in a postgame press conference. “It’s tough,” Penix said. “I had a lot of family in the stands, so for them to see that performance, a performance I have never had in my life, it kind of sucked. But we’re going to shake back.”

The Buccaneers capitalized on the offensive struggles with a dominant rushing performance. Tampa Bay recorded 324 total rushing yards, setting a single-game franchise record. The total included career highs for Bucky Irving, who gained 170 yards, and Kenneth Gainwell, who accumulated 140 yards. They became only the second pair of Buccaneers to both rush for more than 100 yards in the same game, following Warrick Dunn and Mike Alstott.

The Falcons entered the matchup with the fourth-best rushing defense in the National Football League. However, safety Jessie Bates III provided the primary defensive highlight when he blocked a touchdown attempt in the first quarter. “That was probably the craziest game I’ve ever been a part of, (at least) in the first half,” Bates said.

The team is scheduled to face the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid on Sunday. Pass rusher James Pearce Jr. is expected to return from suspension for that matchup.

The Falcons will look to adjust their game plan before traveling to Spain. The next contest offers a different challenge against a different opponent in a distinct venue.
