Eight runs crossed the plate with two outs in the fifth inning at Tropicana Field, a first in World Series history, as Milwaukee beat Tampa Bay 10-1 on Monday night to move within one victory of the franchise's first championship. The Brewers hold a 3-0 lead in the series.
Brice Turang's two-run single started the rally after a replay review overturned a forceout at second base. Garrett Mitchell followed with an RBI single, Cooper Pratt hit a two-run double down the left-field line, and Sal Frelick added an RBI double. The Brewers sent seven straight hits to the plate during the inning, all with two outs.
Jackson Chourio opened the rally with a single and later added an RBI double off Cole Sulser. He finished 4 for 5 with a stolen base, becoming the second-youngest player with four hits and a steal in a World Series game behind Ty Cobb in 1908. Turang and William Contreras each went 3 for 5, and Milwaukee collected 16 hits against Freddy Peralta and five relievers. Peralta, who was named ALCS MVP against Cleveland, was charged with five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Rookie left-hander Robert Gasser allowed one hit and faced the minimum 18 batters through six innings. He retired 14 straight after Yandy Diaz's leadoff single in the first. A caught stealing and a double play helped him become the first starter to face the minimum through six innings of a World Series game since Arizona's Curt Schilling in 2001. Brandon Woodruff pitched the ninth in his first appearance in 3 1/2 months, having been sidelined by a shoulder injury, and allowed one run on two hits.
Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash called the fifth inning "deflating" after his team loaded the Brewers' dugout with 40,388 fans in attendance. Milwaukee fans cheered from behind the visitors' dugout. "I was sitting in the dugout getting ready to go. There was two outs, and next thing you know, 40 minutes later, I have to go out on the field," Gasser said.
Of the 43 previous major league teams that fell behind 3-0 in a best-of-seven postseason series, only the 2004 Boston Red Sox came back to win. Milwaukee finished the regular season with 103 wins, swept the Dodgers in the NLCS, and has won eight straight playoff games. Game 4 is Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. Griffin Jax starts for Tampa Bay; Milwaukee has not named a starter.
